Salasai

AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Dec 16, 2020

After graduating with a BA major in fashion from Massey University, Salasai founder Kirsha Whitcher was snapped up by streetwear brand Mooks Clothing, allowing her to cut her teeth at the helm of their
womenswear range in the early 2000s. Upon launching the Salasai brand in 2007, styling references which stayed true to New Zealand culture, 90s hip hop and multiculturalism were represented in Whitcher’s output, alongside dark colours and unisex drape.

Early Salasai was monochromatic with soft tailoring and a languid aesthetic, synonymous with the mood of New Zealand fashion at the time. This look placed Whitcher as a noted voice in the Kiwi fashion scene.

Now based in Perth, Western Australia, an undercurrent of New Zealand reference remains in Whitcher’s creations, with new femininity and confidence, an upper layer of luxe and refined craftsmanship mixing with softer palettes reflecting a coming of age, an appreciation and embrace of the female ability to be both hard and sweet simultaneously.

The remix of Salasai yesteryears and contemporary silhouette juxtapositions truly brings to life the heartbeat of Whitcher’s new Spring/Summer 2021 releases.

Grunge and romance, dominant contrasting colours and the offsetting of conventional prettiness for flashes of unisex androgyny is the true Autobiography of Salasai.
