Cupra Formentor – Distinctly dynamic

Showcasing a stunning coupe-style silhouette, the first model to be exclusively developed by the Cupra brand has arrived in New Zealand.

Available in two specifications and with its powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine in two states of tune, the new Cupra Formentor is now available to New Zealand buyers.

Engineered as the first 100% Cupra designed vehicle from SEAT’s sporty partner brand, the Formentor brings together the all-terrain attributes of an SUV, with the more performance-focused essence of a hatchback, distilled into a striking coupé-style silhouette.

In New Zealand, the Formentor will initially be available in two trims – the Formentor V 4Drive and the range-topping Formentor VZ. The former will boast peak power of 140kW and 390Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, while the latter ups power to 228kW and available torque to 400Nm from the same powerplant.

Inside the Formentor, occupants are cocooned in a high-end interior that wraps around the driver and passengers. A new selector control replaces the selector lever used in the rest of the SEAT and Cupra range. The shift-by-wire selector leaves the centre console uncluttered: in fact, with haptic touch controls for many convenience items, the new Formentor presents one of the cleanest, fuss-free interiors available.

At the centre of things is the Formentor’s 12” infotainment screen: the largest screen ever offered on any model from Cupra. This colourful, logically organised screen is also the gateway to a vast array of personalisation details Formentor owners can enjoy, setting up preferences for many convenience and comfort features, right down to cabin accent lighting colours. There are plenty of options elsewhere too, such as in the attractive range of 18” and 19” machined alloy wheel designs in silver or signature copper. Nine exterior colours are available, including two matte paint options.

An attractive detail line that arcs across the entire width of the cabin above the dashboard incorporates the car’s new Side Assist system, which alerts the driver to the presence of vehicles beyond their peripheral vision by lighting continuously when detecting a vehicle or flashing when the turn indicators have been deployed.

Other new safety systems for Cupra debuting here include Exit Assist, which warns of a possible collision with a moving object when opening the doors and a new central airbag which sits between the driver and front passenger seat and is designed to mitigate impacts on occupants’ heads as a result of the inertia produced by a collision.

Together with the Cupra Leon, the Cupra Formentor will eventually also integrate a Formentor V eHybrid plug-in version next year, helping to underline the notion that electrification and performance make for thrilling partners.

The Cupra Formentor V 4Drive is priced from $54,900 (plus ORCs), while the Forementor VZ is priced from $68,900 (plus ORCs). Both iterations of this exciting new model are available now.
