Hunter Finds the Spoils

Six-time IndyCar Champ Scott Dixon wasn't the only grinning kiwi at the St. Petersburg street circuit over the weekend. Compatriot Hunter McElrea was also victorious in the Indy Pro 2000 support series; claiming his maiden victory in the final race of the season.

After a frustrating fourth place in the opening race of the weekend, McElrea made the most of his second-row start in the season finale, by attacking after a safety car restart "I had a mega restart moving into 2nd, then passing into the lead a couple of corners later. I then put my head down and controlled the whole race till the end - finally getting that elusive win!"

The result means McELrea finishes fifth in the championship, just nine points off third, "It feels like a big weight off my shoulders to get this win. Considering I was 18th after the first weekend at Road America, and the many other things out of my control that cost me this year is a good recovery."

That fightback contributed to McElrea being given the '2020 Indy Pro 2000 Spirit Award' at the end of season awards dinner.
