Flying Kiwis

It has been a successful season for two Kiwi drivers flying the flag in Europe.

Liam Lawson continued his impressive debut in the European DTM Championship with a history-making win and a championship lead heading into the season’s last four races. Meanwhile Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans finished the 2020/21 Formula E championship season on a high, helping secure his team a runner-up result in a close-fought campaign.

LIAM LAWSON

Liam Lawson enjoyed an impressive debut in the 2021 DTM Championship, rocketing from rookie to challenger after just a couple of rounds.

The 19-year-old Red Bull Junior driver has vaulted into a 10-point lead in the DTM championship after two podium finishes at the Assen double-race weekend in September. As we went to print on this issue, Lawson had an impressive eight podiums from 12 races. He also made history by winning the opening DTM Championship race at Monza, becoming the youngest DTM winner ever.

Heading into the last four races of the season, Lawson leads the DTM Championship with 175 points to Marco Wittmann's 165, with Kelvin van der Linde on 160 and Maxillian Gotz with 155 points. Alongside DTM duties, Lawson also continued racing in the FIA Formula 2 championship.

MITCH EVANS

Mitch Evans, secured a home race third-place podium finish at the London E-Prix round of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E championship in July, marking the first podium on home soil for Jaguar in 30 years.

The win was another highlight in a stellar year for the British Formula E team, which finished the seventh season of the all-electric championship runners-up in team standings. This season was the most successful so far for Jaguar Racing, with seven podiums, two wins, one pole position and 177 points scored. Evans finished fourth overall, securing five podiums for the British team.

His position as Jaguar Racing’s long-standing driver will continue too, with the team committing to a new multi-year contract with the Kiwi racer. Evans has been with the British team since its inception in 2016.
