Škoda eco-friendly upholstery not only repurposes genuine leather that would otherwise go to waste but also utilizes olive tree leaves that would typically be discarded.
Launched in New Zealand earlier this year, the Škoda Enyaq is a highly equipped fully electric SUV that, aside from it’s electric powertrain, boast a number of environmentally conscious production methods and materials. Among them, seats upholstered with sustainable materials.
These materials, typically considered waste products, are processed using a unique method. Unlike conventional leather tanning processes that employ chemicals, this innovative approach involves rendering the leather with a special extract derived from olive tree leaves. The extract contains a natural substance produced by olive trees to repel animal pests. Remarkably, the extraction process, reminiscent of infusing tea, adheres to the strictest criteria set by the food industry. Furthermore, it is crucial to highlight that the leaves used for this purpose are obtained as waste from the olive harvest, ensuring no trees are cut down.
Harnessing Olive Leaves:
To create the necessary tanning extract for a single Enyaq vehicle, approximately 215,000 olive leaves are required. This extract is integral to transforming the leather into the usable Olivenleder product, which meets all of Škoda's stringent quality requirements. The durability, appearance, and overall feel of the leather have been verified through machine tests as well as extensive examinations conducted by independent experts.
Commitment to Sustainability:
Johannes Neft, Škoda's board member responsible for technical development, emphasizes the company's commitment to innovation and circular economy principles.
“From the earliest stages of design to the final testing phases, every detail and component is approached with an eco-friendly mindset. The materials and products chosen must align with the highest standards expected by Škoda's customers.” Says Neft.
Škoda's focus on sustainability and circular economy principles extends beyond olive leaf upholstery. The Czech carmaker employs various environmentally friendly materials and processes in its vehicles. For instance, the Karoq compact SUV features upholstery made from recycled materials, including fabrics composed of 70% recycled PET bottles. Škoda continues to explore these avenues to meet and exceed the ever-evolving expectations of its customers. In the future, the company aspires to produce all natural leather upholstery for its cars in supremely eco-friendly ways.
By repurposing waste products and implementing innovative techniques, the Enyaq takes a significant step towards a circular economy.
